Mapping Gansu’s Culture Domains
UNESCO’s efforts to advocate for the role of culture for sustainable development over the last decade resulted in three milestone Resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (2010, 2011 and 2013), which acknowledge the role of culture as an enabler and a driver of sustainable development. Culture as a driver of sustainable development has also been proven through both the age of prosperity and the time of crisis.
In 2019, the UNESCO Thematic Indicators for Culture in the 2030 Agenda – Culture|2030 Indicators was published, which provides a framework to measure and monitor the progress of culture’s contribution to the national and local implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Using the UNESCO Culture|2030 Indicators as a guiding framework, the Project cooperates with local and national experts to conduct an in-depth analysis of the multiple ways in which culture contributes to the economic, social and environmental dimensions of development. This activity aims to generate an analysis bringing the available data together to highlight linkages and areas of intersection between culture and other policy areas, fostering a better understanding of the breadth of culture’s actions and their direct and indirect contribution to sustainable development.
The methodology for this activity is be based on:
- A desktop research of Gansu’s current situation of the cultural sector including cultural policies and legislation;
- A review of relevant existing data and resources, practices and processes, as documented in administrative and statistical documents;
- Participation of a wide range of stakeholders, including government, practitioners, cultural professionals, cultural companies, artists, media, civil society and academics;
- First-hand data collection to supplement the existing data.
