Phase IV (2021-2024)

Since 2007, UNESCO Beijing Office has been implementing the “Conservation and Management of World Heritage Sites in China” Project with the financial support from China Youth Development Foundation Mercedes-Benz Star Fund. For 15 years, the project has provided sound support to the Chinese government and heritage management authorities to make steadfast contributions in promoting sustainable development of China’s World Heritage sites. Launched in 2021, the Project Phase IV in 2022 has made a steady progress in consolidating culture-driven modes of rural revitalization in 4 pilot sites, with a special emphasis on the participation of youth in conserving and commuting heritage values and promoting green development. In 2022 a total of 30 activities were carried out, directly benefiting 8,655people (55% women) and sensitizing 52,682. Approximately 300,000USD was raised in both financial and in-kind support from local partners to supplement the project activities.

Highlights

Some highlights of 2022 project achievements are outlined below:

Yi Embroidery Grown Out of the Stone Forest

  • Under the “Yi Embroidery Grown Out of the Stone Forest” pilot activity in Shilin, Yunnan Province, the first pilot of Culture|2030 Indicators  successfully concluded, including both secondary data and a primary survey reaching 1885 individuals from diverse backgrounds (54.5% women). The data collected highlighted a positive position within the provincial landscape, where cultural and creative industries (CCIs) account for 8.1% of local GDP, far higher than the 2020 national average of 4.43%.   • An Atlas of Shilin Embroidery Patterns has been compiled, categorizing over 200 traditional patterns with their historical interpretations of the cultural roots and their transformation. This is a solid step further for the planned registration of state-level Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
  • A 2-day workshop on Shilin Yi (Sani) Embroidery Product Standard was organized in July 2022, with 50 people (80% women) increasing their capacity in understanding and the further application of the Standards. The Shilin World Heritage X Living Heritage Cultural Exchange Fair was organized in July 2022, directly deepening the networking of the 113 living heritage bearers and enterprise stakeholders (50% women) across Yunnan Province, sensitizing 21,583 visitors on awareness of living heritage.

Bamboo for Carbon Neutrality in Rural Areas

Under the “Bamboo for Carbon Neutrality in Rural Areas” pilot activity in Chishui, Guizhou Province, two Decent Employment Workshops (in total 30 days) were organized in April and June 2022 to increase the bamboo-weaving skills of 50 participants (95% women), facilitating the creation of 25 jobs. A database for bamboo weaving practitioners was created with 74 people (89% women) in roster, and a community training center was established to enhance the institutional capacity for systemic trainings. Within the framework of the second Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress (BARC), together with INBAR, a webinar on New Pathways for Carbon Reduction and Low Carbon Development in World Heritage Sites was held to explore the role of World Heritage and protected areas in contributing to the “Dual Carbon Goals”, the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Miao Embroidery for a Vibrant Homeland

Under “Miao Embroidery for a Vibrant Homeland” pilot activity in Songtao, Guizhou Province, an online roundtable on university art research field excursion to Dawan Village was organized on 29 Apr 2022 for 321 online participants and 20+ art colleges. In line with the Baseline Investigation Report on Rural Revitalization with Cultural Heritage in Songtao Miao Autonomous County, the Dawan Village Rural Environment Development Plan and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Workstation Development Plan were compiled within the project framework. Starting from 2022, the project is steadily progressing the preparations for establishing an Intangible Cultural Heritage Workstation and the planning and design of a model homestay at the Dawan pilot village. These activities aim to pilot the culture-driven mode for rural revitalization and sustainable development, synergizing Songtao’s long history, culture and natural scenery with cultural tourism.

Panda Ambassador

Under the Panda Ambassador pilot activity in Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, together with Sun Yat-sen University, 2 heritage education lectures organized (18 Mar, 22 Apr 2022) to enhance heritage knowledge of 250 primary school students and teachers in Wolong (58% women).  40 (67.5% women) middle school and university students participated in a 5-day workshop organized in Aug 2022 and acquired skills and raised awareness on heritage conservation and nature education through lectures, field excursion, on-site demonstration, group discussions and interdisciplinary dialogues.  For beekeeping activity, 5 community trainings organized for 59 villagers (49% women) on honey packaging, sales, marketing and cooperative governance, further enhancing the sustainable production and sales capacity of the cooperatives.  In September, a Webinar on World Heritage Education in Global and Local Context: The Role of Sustainable Tourism was held to raise awareness on the synergies between heritage education and sustainable tourism, and to share good practices on how to leverage tourism in sustainable way for delivering quality education in the context of World Heritage

Heritage So Young

For Heritage So Young activity, two youth-led field excursions to SGPS and Songtao were conducted in March and July respectively, with 2 twinning established, 9 videos, 154 photos and 2 articles produced. A webinar on Communicating Heritage Value Through New Media was held in May 2022, helping the participants to enhance the understanding and outreach of heritage values through new media, especially when traditional ways of information sharing encounter increasing challenges due to the pandemic. Based on close monitoring and analysis of media coverage data relevant to UNESCO’s project activities and pilot World Heritage sites, a Thematic Report on New Media Communication was developed to provide insights into how new media plays a role in knowledge sharing and value communication on heritage.  Two online training sessions were held to enhance the awareness of 43 living heritage bearers and community leaders on the importance of e-commerce platforms in promoting and monetizing living heritage crafts and other sustainable livelihood products, and to increase their skills on the communicational and operational techniques on newly emerged e-commerce platforms.

Throughout 2022, 24 news releases about project activities and collaborations on UNESCO's official WeChat and 2 videos on UNESCO's official Weibo attracted 35,000 reads and 540,000 views, respectively.
