Education
Despite being upper-middle level countries, significant inequalities persist across and within South-East Europe in terms of access to education, learning outcomes, quality of education due to Inter-religious and Inter-cultural barriers which demand support and mainstreaming in terms of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) through Education, and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within SDG-4 (e.g. Quality Education, with focus on SDG Target 4.7).
UNESCO provides methodological and technical backstopping to the situation analysis, capacity-development, monitoring and mapping the interdisciplinary implementation of SDG-4.7 at country and sub-regional levels. The UNESCO Guides on Global Citizenship Education and Preventing Violent Extremism were translated into the national languages and are used for teacher, student and community training, which impact is being evaluated. A particular attention is given to the Intersection of SDG-4 (Quality Education) and SDG-5 (Gender Equality), and a comparative analysis of this nexus at the regional level has been prepared.
By applying the approach 鈥淣o One Left Behind鈥, UNESCO analyses the disparities and disaggregated data, concerning education of the vulnerable and marginalized groups by gender and ethnicity, in order to address the issues of out-of-school children and drop-outs.
