East Asia Biosphere Reserve Network (EABRN)
Strengthening Research and Governance Capacity of Biosphere Reserves

With the continuous support of the National Commission and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea, EABRN is a regional network established in 1995 to support the UNESCO鈥檚 Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and has 3 priority themes for cooperation: eco-tourism, conservation policy, and trans-boundary cooperation. EABRN facilitates the exchange of information among biosphere reserves (BRs) and its governing bodies and conducts regular regional meetings on issues of common concern. It also serves as a mechanism to facilitate training and site-to-site cooperation.
- The network counts 7 member states: 5 founding members of the network - China, the Democratic People鈥檚 Republic of Korea (DPRK), Japan, Mongolia and the Republic of Korea (ROK), and were joined by the Russian Federation in 1998 and Kazakhstan in 2011;
- The network organized 7 onsite training sessions on the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to BR management in 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2017; the 8th edition will take place in 2024;
- The network delivered 2 online training webinars in 2021 and 2023, linking authorities, professionals, practitioners and students across different countries.
