The archives of the Unique Registry of Victims of Political Violence in Peru (1980-2000), contain the names, testimonies and memories of thousands of citizens who were victims of violence during the internal armed conflict. It is the largest repository of the collective memory of violence, since it centralizes information from all previous records and contains thousands of new stories collected in the most remote corners of the country. The archives have become the source of access to reparation policies implemented by the State for individuals and peoples. This experience contributes to the policies of reparation for violence in Latin America and responds to a need for a more inclusive national-regional history.

The Archive consists of three documentary holdings:

1. Files of the political violence in Peru. This constitutes the core of the Unique Registry of Victims, which provides evidence of the status of individual and collective victims of those who suffered damages during the period of political violence in Peru (1980-2000). There are 113,051 files on individual victims, 5,697 on communities and villages, and 46 on organised groups of displaced persons. Each file contains a registration form along with related documentation: witness testimonies, sworn statements, newspaper clippings, photographs, complaints filed, baptism, marriage and death certificates, community center minutes, among others. It includes the documents generated during the application evaluation process and the final ruling. Finally, each file includes an accreditation certificate, as proof of the registration of the victim or community in the Registry. In this way, the victims can access the Comprehensive Reparations Plan that the State has implemented.

2. Database of the Unique Registry of Victims of political violence in Peru. It contains the processed and digitalised information of all the files, enabling the work of the user units via the web system. The database contains the cases that have been evaluated and qualified, structured in tables organized by objects and information components.

3. Audio recordings of the testimonies of the victims of political violence in Peru. These recordings contain the voices of each one of those affected, directly or indirectly, by the violence of the armed conflict. There are 6,521 testimonies, 6,429 individual victims and 92 collective victims, originally recorded on 5,210 cassettes. These recordings gather the victims’ own accounts of the tragedies, in their original languages (Spanish, Quechua, Ashaninka, among others). There are more than six thousand stories, which contain all the emotional charge of victims from Ayacucho, Huánuco, Huancavelica, Junín and Apurimac.
