The Third Edition

The third edition of the Global Forum against Racism and Discrimination took place in São Paulo, Brazil, from 29 November to 1 December 2023. Under the theme "Race to the top: putting racial equity and justice at the forefront of development agendas," this edition focused on placing racial issues at the core of development and implementation strategies worldwide.

The Forum gathered Ministers, high-ranking officials, mayors, academics, civil society actors, and artists to share best practices, strengthen commitments, and discuss effective strategies to combat racism and various forms of discrimination. The agenda covered key topics such as co-creating inclusive policies with community input, addressing historical systems like transatlantic enslavement, promoting gender equality, leveraging data to drive anti-racism efforts, and tackling the role of artificial intelligence in perpetuating racism.

A significant outcome of this edition was the launch of the , a global initiative aimed at fostering innovative and inclusive policy solutions. Additionally, UNESCO introduced the  and the , and launched  of the UNESCO General History of Africa, which maps African diasporas and highlights their contributions to modern societies. The Forum featured 20 panels, 16 parallel events, cultural presentations, and an Afro-entrepreneurship fair, all aimed at fostering dialogue and action to advance racial equity globally.

The Second Edition

°Õ³ó±ð second edition of the Global Forum against Racism and Discrimination was held in Mexico City on 28 and 29 November 2022. It centered around the transversal theme of "Post-Covid Recovery" to directly address the adverse impact that racism, discrimination and complexities have had on the most vulnerable populations. 

This edition provided the basis to take stock on where we are in the fight against racism. It also provided a platform to relevant actors in the public, private and civil society arena that are championing effective strategies against racism and discrimination. 

The agenda covered various topics such as building the UNESCO Roadmap against racism and discrimination, setting up effective frameworks, rights of women, adolescents and girls, discrimination towards people of African descent and of Asian origin, the role of cities and civic space, the link with the artistic and academic communities, discrimination in artificial intelligence, and resource mobilization.

The First Edition

The first edition of the Global Forum against Racism was held in Paris, France on 22 March 2021. It was one of the first major advocacy initiatives to contribute to the Global Call against Racism and focused on the following objectives:  

  • Presenting and consolidating the outcomes of the UNESCO anti-racism and anti-discrimination initiatives, with the view to intensifying the UNESCO-wide efforts among a larger network of partners, especially within the COVID-19 context; 
  • Gathering like-minded Member States, high-level academic and scientific experts, renowned thought-leaders and change-makers, as well as foundations and donor institutions, in order to build a global front of partners against racism and discriminations in different fields; 
  • Enhancing the knowledge and awareness of these networks to advance inclusive and gender transformative actions that foster intercultural dialogue, tackle racism and discriminations and systematically promote human rights; 
  • Contributing to developing an anti-discrimination toolbox that could effectively enhance government policies and practices to recognize systemic discrimination, boost affirmative action and foster inclusive policies; 
  • Identifying the next steps in enhancing an anti-racism roadmap, with specific proposals, in consultation with these partner networks
