Freedom of Expression聽
The UNESCO Kabul Office is a vocal supporter of the right to free speech and a steadfast defender of journalists' rights to their own freedom and safety while defending press freedom in Afghanistan.
This endeavor is carried out using a comprehensive strategy that includes advocacy, capacity building, and informative material dissemination. Key stakeholders, such as media organizations, media entities, journalists, and other pertinent parties, are the focus of these strategically focused campaigns.
Additionally, the UNESCO Kabul Office plays a crucial role in assisting media outlets in producing and disseminating material in accordance with accepted professional standards. The distribution of real and verified information supports both humanitarian and basic human needs such as education, culture, and health. The strategy goes beyond traditional reporting to include instructional broadcasting, with the overriding goal of preventing the establishment of information gaps in the Afghan setting.
Press Freedom聽
As the only UN organization in Afghanistan tasked with promoting and defending the core values of press and expression freedom, UNESCO holds a unique role across all platforms. Community development relies on crucial pillars, which serve as powerful tools to enhance public participation and promote their voice during deliberations. They are also emphasized as being necessary for the defense and progress of all other human rights.
To strengthen press freedom, the UNESCO Kabul Office regularly interacts with media outlets and media support groups, providing consultation services and encouraging multi-stakeholder collaboration with the goal of developing statutory and regulatory frameworks supportive of press freedom. These activities aim to shape press freedom, information access, and online expression in accordance with international standards and norms.
Commemorative Activities聽
To improve the safety of journalists across a range of media channels, vigilant media landscape monitoring and continuous advocacy activities are combined. UNESCO's dedication to this goal is demonstrated by its active involvement in and organizing of occasions of international importance, such as World Press Freedom Day, International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, and International Day for Universal Access to Information.
Afghan Media Professionals' Capacity Building
There is a worry about the effectiveness and quality of journalism education in Afghanistan, especially in terms of training media professionals who can handle complex subjects. It is essential to improve the skills of journalists to promote a media environment that is more sensitive to the values of human rights and sustainable development. This improvement is made possible by broadening their knowledge, which equips them to deftly handle complicated issues.
