Throughout Asia and the Pacific, cultural heritage is under threat - with limited funding, legal protection, awareness and understanding in dealing with cultural resources.

Comprehensive heritage management is essential as heritage contributes vitally to the larger goal of sustainable development. UNESCO advocates culture as a crosscutting issue to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in all three dimensions of sustainability (social, economic, environmental).

UNESCO Bangkok encourages active engagement from civil society in sustainably managing heritage resources. Since 2000, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation has recognized over 200 projects with private sector involvement from

25 countries for demonstrating technical excellence, social and economic viability and policy impact.

Our office builds technical capacity through higher education and professional training. We seek to maximize impacts by creating communities of practice linking universities, local governments and heritage authorities to share and adapt best management and safeguarding practices.
