Title: Day of the Dead for Journalists killed in M茅xico

Description: The Day of the Dead is a traditional celebration where Mexican people remember their deceased relatives and loved ones with an Altar de Muertos or shrine decorated with flowers, bread and the favourite meals of those they have lost to welcome back their souls for a yearly reunion. Since 2016, Tijuanapress.com has combined this date and festivities to bring attention to the issue of safety of journalists in Mexico by remembering the Mexican journalists killed in the current year, posting their pictures on an altar, along with the traditional decorations.

A menudo sin el respaldo de un medio de comunicaci贸n que pueda proteger su seguridad, los/las comunicadores/as comunitarios/as de diversos pa铆ses de la regi贸n deben hacer frente a amenazas graves no s贸lo para el ejercicio de su profesi贸n sino tambi茅n para la protecci贸n de sus vidas y las de sus familias.
En este marco, el an谩lisis de las iniciativas para promover la seguridad de los periodistas m谩s vulnerables de todo el colectivo resulta de particular importancia en el contexto del D铆a Internacional para poner fin a la Impunidad de Cr铆menes contra Periodistas.
En este conversatorio se repasar谩 la situaci贸n actual de los/las comunicadores/as comunitarios/as y se debatir谩 con las organizaciones de la sociedad civil y del Sistema Interamericano de Derechos Humanos abocadas al tema las mejores estrategias para responder a las necesidades espec铆ficas de este colectivo.

Agencias de la ONU, como la UNESCO, la OIM, el ACNUDH y el ACNUR, han respondido a diferentes problemas asociados con la seguridad de los periodistas. Sin embargo, a煤n es necesario afinar las respuestas y construir mecanismos que brinden un abordaje coordinado sobre esta situaci贸n en la regi贸n.
El panel tiene como objetivo repasar de manera colectiva e interdisciplinar los desaf铆os que se presentan a la hora de abordar estos desaf铆os. Un Panel integrado por periodistas y especialistas, as铆 como organizaciones que trabajan con periodistas, intercambiar谩n sobre los desaf铆os que se presentan ante esta situaci贸n en la regi贸n.
