Youth and Peace at the forefront of Director-General鈥檚 visit to Jordan
On 21 August, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, is undertaking a trip to Amman, Jordan, to take part in the opening of the Global Forum on Youth, Peace and Security, hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, held in the presence of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs, His Excellency Mr Nasser Judeh.
The Global Forum is designed to help shape a new international agenda on youth, peace and security. It will build on the thematic debate organized by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan during its presidency of the Security Council in April 2015, as well as on-going efforts to step-up global attention to young people鈥檚 contribution to peace and chart a common agenda. For this first gathering, young people, youth-led organizations, non-governmental organizations, governments and UN entities will come together to agree on a roadmap to partner with young people in preventing conflict, countering violent extremism and building lasting peace.
Within the framework of the Global Forum, the Director-General will also address a high-level event on the ongoing destruction of heritage in the region. The event, organized by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs of Jordan, will bring together Foreign Ministers and high-level UN representatives to discuss the threats of violent extremism and cultural cleansing.
While in Jordan, the Director-General is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs, His Excellency Mr Nasser Judeh.
