Webinar: Prison education in Latin America

On 22 February 2023, the UNESCO Chair in Applied Research for Education in Prison will host a webinar, ‘Prison education: Sharing practices and knowledge in Latin America’, in partnership with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and the International Council for Adult Education (ICEA). It is the second in a series of webinars on ‘Innovative practices and research in education in prison’.

shows that with 267 out of 100,000 citizens incarcerated, the Latin America and Caribbean region witnesses the second highest imprisonment rates worldwide, with figures constantly on the rise.  A large percentage of them, like so many inmates around the world, are deprived of their right to education due to myriad factors, including prison overcrowding and a lack of funds and trained staff, contrary to international standards.

During this webinar, experts from the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina), Playa Ancha University of Educational Sciences (Chile) and the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) will shed light on different aspects of prison education in Latin America with a focus on Argentina, Chile, and Brazil.
