Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful new tool that has been developed in recent years and is broadly understood as a system with the ability to process data in a way which resembles intelligent behavior. It is deeply intertwined with culture, heritage, and sustainable development, both in how the tool is created and how it affects our lives.

This event will provide an opportunity to understand what AI is and how it can affect sustainable development and the safeguarding of living heritage practices by affected communities, groups, and individuals. It will also explore what can be done to maximize benefits and mitigate harms for the bearers of intangible cultural heritage.

This panel will also present UNESCO’s approach to AI, explaining links between the Recommendation on the Ethics of AI (2021), and the , and inform audiences about new and ongoing initiatives in this regard.
