UNESCO’s Role Highlighted at Climate Change Summit with Young Scientists in Turkestan

Amidst significant climate change challenges, experts and young scientists convened on April 25 - 26 in Turkestan, Kazakhstan to deliberate on combating this global issue.

The summit, organized by  and  in partnership with  and the UNESCO Almaty Regional Office, focused on addressing the ecological changes through sustainable energy and transport development. The event aligned with UNESCO’s Declaration of Ethical Principles in relation to Climate Change and , fostering a platform for ethical and scientific discussions.

Participants included some 150 scientists, doctoral candidates, and government officials from regions across Kazakhstan. The program featured lectures and workshops that not only addressed the direct ecological impacts but also the broader social implications of climate change, emphasizing the need for a fair and equitable transition.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Galymzhan Zhankuatov, the Chairperson of the Committee of Science, noted the critical nature of discussing global ecological changes and their impact on Kazakhstan, highlighting the benefits of international experience for the nation’s young scientists.

Mr. Kamil Akatov, Chairperson of the Board of the Science Fund, mentioned that the platform was aimed at discussing ways to combat climate change and methods to counteract this phenomenon. He emphasized that an important part of the event involved presentations of projects by young scientists in various fields, including climate change, medicine, and the nuclear industry.

Mr. Maxat Baibekov, Head of the Social and Human Sciences Sector at the UNESCO Almaty Regional Office, emphasized the pressing need for coordinated actions to address the multifaceted challenges of climate change, water scarcity, and resource management. He underlined UNESCO’s role in developing scientific cooperation and fostering initiatives that unite various stakeholders to share knowledge and best practices. Mr. Baibekov also announced the launch of several projects for young scientists, including the creation of a Central Asian Youth Scientific Network to enhance regional collaboration.

The summit also featured international insights with presentations from Japanese scientists on their collaborative research in bioenergy and sustainable development. Keynote speakers included Dr. Toshihiko Yamada from Hokkaido University and Dr. Takashi Ninomiya, an Invited Professor at the Far East Department of Tsukuba University, Japan.

A pivotal aspect of the summit was the discussion on grant competition rules for commercializing scientific achievements, providing young researchers with valuable information on navigating the complexities of funding and project management.
