UNESCO technical mission to the World Heritage site in Valparaiso ends
The objective of this mission was to provide the Chilean Government, and the national institutions in charge of the World Heritage site in ValparaÃso, with technical advice to help guide future management practices and strategies for the site . The recommendations from the mission will contribute to the final report on the state of conservation of the historic center of the city, a report that Chile must submit to UNESCO, in accordance with the latest decision by the World Heritage Committee.
During their mission to ValparaÃso, a city that joined the World Heritage List in 2003, the two experts toured every corner of the heritage site on foot and met with a significant number of public, private and civil society stakeholders. They were received by the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, Julieta Brodsky; the Undersecretary of Cultural Heritage, Carolina Pérez, and the Mayor of ValparaÃso, Jorge Sharp; as well as the Governor, Rodrigo Mundaca; the Presidential Delegate, SofÃa González; the Regional Ministerial Secretary of Culture, Arts and Heritage of the ValparaÃso Region, Patricia Mix; and the President of Empresa Portuaria de ValparaÃso, Luis Eduardo Escobar. They also met with senators, members of Congress hundreds ofcommunity members, from economic sectors, chambers of commerce, academics, architects, labor unions, armed forces institutions, firefighters, religious organizations, tourism and culture, among others.
These meetings were preceded or accompanied by the exchange of technical documents related to the current management of the site and its state of conservation. The technical report from the two experts will be drafted and submitted to the Chilean State in the near future.
