UNESCO and the South African Mint are releasing the first-ever set of commemorative coins dedicated to UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Reserves.

The set consists of two pure gold and two sterling silver coins. They are produced by the South African Mint in partnership with UNESCO, and themed on the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve - one of the eight Biosphere Reserves in South Africa and part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme.

One gold coin shows the Marsh Rose, the Cape Mountain Leopard and a cabin of the Oudebosch Mountain Camp. The other gold coin features the African Black Oystercatcher, the African Penguin, and the Cape Clawless Otter

One sterling silver coin depicts the Elgin Valley - once a wildlife haven for large herds of antelope and home to San hunters and Khoi pastoralists. The other sterling silver coin represents the Southern Right Whale and the conservation of Abalone.

The masterfully crafted coins highlight not only the natural beauty of Kogelberg, but also the importance and value of the site as a learning place for sustainable development.

UNESCO established the Commemorative Coins and Medals Programme in 2012, in partnership with the Swiss company Produits Artistiques Métaux Précieux (PAMP).

Working with the central banks and national mints of its Member States, 91Â鶹¹ú²ú¾«Æ·×ÔÅÄ issued a range of coins within the partnership in order to promote the Organization’s flagship programmes and activities.

Previous coins featured World Heritages sites.
