From April 24 to 26, UNESCO Almaty conducted a series of national consultations on the revision of textbooks and teaching and learning materials on STEM subjects in Tajikistan. The mission was part of the “Strengthening competency-based and ICT-enabled STEM and VET education and teacher-training in Tajikistan” project and aimed to assist international and national consultants in conducting interviews with education stakeholders.
The consultations included meetings with various national stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education and Science, the Tajik Academy of Education, the Information and Communication Technologies Center, the Republican Training Methodology Center, and Pedagogical universities.
By focusing on the development of skills and knowledge, rather than solely on content, competency-based education enables students to succeed in STEM fields and prepares them for the demands of the workforce. With the 'Strengthening competency-based and ICT-enabled STEM and VET education and teacher-training in Tajikistan' project we hope to promote CBE and improve access to high-quality education in Tajikistan
UNESCO education experts and consultants, in partnership with the government stakeholders, sought to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the existing curriculum, textbooks, and teaching materials on STEM subjects at the secondary school and vocational education and training levels. The availability and quality of STEM education materials and resources were also analyzed.
The outcomes of the consultations will be used to revise the textbooks and teaching and learning materials on STEM subjects to promote competency-based, ICT-enabled, and gender-responsive STEM education in Tajikistan.
"Strengthening competency-based and ICT-enabled STEM and VET education and teacher-training in Tajikistan" is a four-year EU-funded project aimed at improving access to high-quality education and increasing the availability of teaching materials and resources for STEM subjects in Tajikistan. The project seeks to develop competency-based curricula, design textbooks and learning materials, and establish national ICT competency standards for teachers. The expected outputs of the project include increased availability of teaching materials, strengthened capacities of teachers and teacher trainers, and increased ICT competencies of secondary education and VET teachers.
