UNESCO Director-General condemns murder of journalist Buenaventura Calder贸n in Honduras
Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has called on the authorities of Honduras to bring to justice the murderers of radio journalist Buenaventura Calder贸n and Maribel Bolian, his wife, both killed in Puerto Lempira, in the east of the country.
鈥淚 condemn the murder of Buenaventura Calder贸n and Maribel Bolian,鈥 said the Director-General. 鈥淚t is essential that the authorities undertake a thorough investigation to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice and punished for their crimes.鈥
According to media reports, two unidentified assailants on a motorbike shot Buenaventura Calder贸n and his wife Maribel Bolian as the two were heading home, killing the journalist and fatally injuring Ms Bolian who died later in hospital.
Buenaventura Calder贸n was the presenter of daily news broadcast Ecos de Mosquitia on Catholic radio Kupia Kumi 94.9.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
