UNESCO Director-General condemns the killing of journalist Kristian Uriel Martínez Zavala in Mexico

I condemn the killing of Kristian Uriel Martínez Zavala and call for a prompt and thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Impunity for crimes against journalists, must not be allowed to prevail, however long it takes.

Kristian Uriel Martínez Zavala, 28, was the founder and director of the online media El Silaoense Mx. He was reportedly killed along with his driver while in his vehicle by gunmen on a motorcycle who ambushed and shot them multiple times. He had previously been under protection after receiving threats in connection to his work.
He is the fourth journalist to be killed in Mexico in 2025.
