The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Brazil promotes, between the 26th and 27th of January, in Ilhabela (SP), a series of meetings to discuss the project to create the Museum of History, Anthropology and Culture of the North Coast.

The future museum is developed by UNESCO in partnership with the Foundation for Conservation and Forestry Production of the State of São Paulo (Fundação Florestal). In addition to cultural equipment aimed at the preservation and conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the region, it will also mark the return of public access to Ilha das Cabras, in Ilhabela. Representatives of the Fundação Florestal, the four municipalities on the north coast of São Paulo (Ilhabela, São Sebastião, Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba), the Public Ministry and the UNESCO team responsible for the project will participate in the two-day agenda.

The Director and Representative of UNESCO in Brazil, Marlova Jovchelovitch Noleto, says that the partnership with the city halls of the municipalities of the North Coast of São Paulo is fundamental for the good development of this project. “The establishment of a governance structure and a consultation process with institutions and communities in the region is the milestone for the creation of a cultural institution that represents the inhabitants of the North Coast, as well as its culture and history,” she declared.

About the project

After three decades of a legal battle against the irregular occupation of Ilha das Cabras, which is part of the small archipelago and municipality of Ilhabela (SP), the island became a public area again in 2022, integrated into the Ilhabela State Park. Through the work of the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office and the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, UNESCO was invited to assist in the development of a cultural equipment project on Ilha das Cabras, in order to give back access to the island to the population.

The Forestry Foundation, responsible for the management of the Ilhabela State Park, and UNESCO then signed a Memorandum of Understanding, in order to start work for the execution of the Museum of History, Anthropology and Culture of the North Coast project.
