Beni Suef, Egypt – November 27, 2024 – As part of ongoing efforts to enhance environmental awareness and climate change adaptation, a team from Save the Children and UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo conducted a follow-up visit to community schools in Beni Suef Governorate. The visit lasted for two days, from November 26 to 27, 2024, and included several educational and awareness activities aimed at enhancing students' and teachers' understanding of climate change and global warming concepts.

The first day of the follow up included a visit to the "Qila Friend of Girls" School. During the visit, to observe the implementation of the the UENSCO Designed interactive activity "Water and Climate Change", where students participated in role-playing to understand the importance of water in agriculture, industry, and household uses. Climate change and global warming concepts were discussed, and students showed great interaction and a deep understanding of these concepts. This was followed by a visit to "Al-Areed Friend of Girls" School, where the same activity was implemented with a focus on sustainable behaviors to conserve resources. Students provided examples from their daily lives on how to conserve water and energy. In both cases, the activity was facilitated by trainers who received training on the implementation of UNESCO’s Water and Climate outreach programme.

The second day of the follow up included a visit to Al-Hakmana School in Al-Hamawi. Where the activity "Energy and Its Sources" was implemented. Students learned about renewable and non-renewable energy and the importance of energy conservation. The relationship between non-renewable energy sources and climate change was discussed, and students showed great interaction through interactive activities and simulations.

These activities are part of a partnership between UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo and Save the Children. UNESCO Cairo played a significant role in the climate change activities conducted in Beni Suef community schools. UNESCO developed and conducted the training of trainers workshops on Climate Change Adaptation Guide developed by UNESCO Cairo office. These workshops were crucial in preparing educators to effectively deliver the activities and concepts to students. These efforts by UNESCO Cairo were instrumental in enhancing the capacity of educators and students to understand and address climate change impacts, fostering a more sustainable and environmentally conscious community. Through this partnership, UNESCO and Save the children reached out to 10,595 students from 341 community schools in the governorate

The partnership between UNESCO and Save the Children was launched by first conducting a hands on Training of  Trainers (ToT) workshop in August 2024. This   allowed the 50 participating trainers (including 40 women) to build the capacity of school teachers in 341 National and community schools using UNESCO activities guide. The trained school teachers, in turn, implemented one or more of the activities  in their own 341 schools  thereby reaching nearly 10,595 students with information on water and climate change adaptation.
