UNESCO Cairo accompanies building capacity for safeguarding Sudan’s living heritage

Sudan Workshop

The ongoing crisis in Sudan has endangered its rich cultural heritage â€“ tangible and intangible. The traditional knowledge, practices and cultural expressions which underpin the cultural diversity of the people of Sudan is in need of urgent safeguarding.

The Capacity Building Workshop on Safeguarding Sudan’s Living Heritage commenced in Cairo on 29 July 2023. This Workshop is organised in cooperation with the Sudanese National Council for Cultural Heritage and Promotion of National Languages Council for ICH and National Language and in partnership with the Cairo Governorate and the UNESCO Offices in Khartoum and Cairo.

Under the facilitation of the UNESCO accredited ICH trainers from Egypt and Sudan, sixteen Sudanese participants have an opportunity to learn the key aspects of the ICH policy making through lectures, group work, and discussions. Nine Egyptian participants join the Workshop for sharing their experience and promoting mutual learning and collaboration.

This activity is supported by the Safeguarding Sudan’s Living Heritage (SSLH) project funded under the British Council Cultural Protection Fund (CPF) Fund in partnership with the UK the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
