UNESCO and Volkswagen join efforts to promote electric mobility in three Spanish biosphere reserves
The Biosphere Reserves of Bardenas Reales, Valles de Jubera, Leza, Cidacos y Alhama, and Ordesa Vi帽amala in Spain will each benefit from 160,000 euros as part of the collaboration with Volkswagen to transition towards electric mobility and address the impacts of climate change.
In 2021, UNESCO and Volkswagen are partnering to implement a five-year project entitled 鈥淪upporting European UNESCO biosphere reserves as model sites for biodiversity recovery and climate change mitigation鈥. The funds allocated to the Biosphere Reserves of ; , and in Spain (160,000 euros each) will be used to implement activities focusing on sustainable mobility, in order to reduce pollution and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The project kicked off on 14 April with the organization of the technical webinar: 鈥溾, with the collaboration of the Spanish National Parks Autonomous Organisation (OAPN).
The seminar was attended by experts from Volkswagen, OAPN, the Andalusia Energy Agency, the Natural Heritage Foundation of Castilla y Le贸n, biosphere reserve managers and Spanish experts.
During the seminar, Miguel Clusener-Godt, Director of UNESCO's Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences and the Secretary of UNESCO鈥檚 MAB Programme, highlighted the importance of this new collaboration with Volkswagen, which will also benefit the biosphere reserve in Germany and in Poland. He also emphasized the important role that Spain has played throughout the 50 years of the MAB Programme, and noted that the country currently hosts the highest number of biosphere reserves (51) on its territory.
