UNESCO and the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage of Chile will address the challenges of artistic and creative freedom at an international meeting
As part of the World Conference on Press Freedom, the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage, in collaboration with UNESCO, will host the International Meeting "The Challenges of Artistic Freedom and Creativity in the Context of the Environmental Crisis and Artificial Intelligence." The event will take place on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at the NAVE Artistic Creation and Residency Center (Libertad 410, Santiago). The event will be broadcasted on the UNESCO Santiago YouTube channel, with simultaneous translation in Spanish and English.
Esther Kuisch Laroche, director of the UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Santiago, commented: "Promoting spaces for artistic freedom and fostering safe and fair work environments for cultural workers is fundamental for the development of creativity, innovation, and the arts in a context of environmental crisis and the unprecedented advancement of artificial intelligence. That is why the dialogue initiated at this meeting is so relevant for us to collectively tackle the challenges that culture presents in becoming a global public good."
"This meeting is an invitation to reflect and devise strategies to improve the working conditions of agents, artists, and creators, especially in the face of the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. It is also an opportunity to address the role of culture in the face of the climate crisis and to explore ways to position it as a driver of sustainable development," said the Minister of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage, Carolina Arredondo.
About the meeting
The session will address the importance of advancing a cultural work agenda that allows for better working conditions for cultural workers. Additionally, it seeks to reflect on the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence and the role of artists in the context of the climate crisis and sustainable development.
The Ministry of Cultures, along with the collaboration of UNESCO and other international and national organizations, is promoting an agenda for the statute of cultural workers, which aims to address cross-sectoral measures to improve the professional situation of cultural agents who face precarious environments in terms of contracts, social security, and recognition of the value of their work.
The event will also analyze how the environmental crisis affects the practice of artistic creation, and highlights the contribution of artists and culture professionals in raising awareness about climate change and its effects on society.
