UNESCO and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Host Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024 Conference

On 30 and 31 October, UNESCO and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan co-host the Conference of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024 under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II in Amman.

Amman, 30 October – The Conference of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024 has officially kicked off in Amman. Co-organized by UNESCO and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on 30 and 31 October, and hosted under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II, the event brings together over 400 experts, educators, policymakers, civil society organizations and media professionals from around the world. Thousands of participants are also tuning in online. The conference theme, “Navigating the new digital frontiers of information: Media and Information Literacy for public-interest information”, focuses on the evolving challenges and opportunities in today’s digital information landscape.

Exploring New Digital Frontiers of Public-Interest Information

The Conference will feature panel discussions with experts addressing the evolving digital media ecosystem. In a dedicated session, they will delve into the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in the media ecosystem highlighting opportunities alongside challenges including ethical concerns and AI-generated misinformation. Experts will analyze UNESCO’s Policy Brief  highlighting the need for media literacy to navigate this complex new frontier.

Empowering Digital Content Creators as Trusted News Providers

Diverse stakeholders will express their views on the influence of digital content creators in the media ecosystem and the importance of equipping the public with Media and Information Literacy (MIL) skills to assess content credibility. Renowned digital content creators and journalists – including Maria Paulina Baena, Faye D’Souza, Felipe Neto and Tarek Sakik – will share personal insights into the challenges they face in today’s digital landscape. These discussions will set the stage for UNESCO’s upcoming course “."

Building Resilience and Social Cohesion Through Media and Information Literacy

Day two of the conference will open with a session on how MIL can enhance citizens' resilience in times of crisis. Speakers from India, Palestine, Sudan and Ukraine will showcase how critical-thinking skills can mitigate panic, promote informed decision-making, and foster social cohesion during turbulent times. The concluding plenary session will explore how cities can leverage MIL to help citizens effectively navigate the digital world and close the digital divide, focusing on UNESCO’s Operational Guidelines on Media and Information Literate Cities.

Engaging Youth in Global Media and Information Literacy Efforts

Youth engagement remains a cornerstone of Global MIL Week. 15 students from Jordanian Universities (Zarqa, Yamourk, Middle East University, Petra University, and Jordan Media Institute) will form a Youth Multimedia Room. Led by prominent academics, this group will providing provide real-time coverage and updates throughout the event. During the closing ceremony, winners of the Global MIL Youth Hackathon will present their innovative projects, demonstrating how young minds are shaping the future of media literacy.

Collaborative Efforts Driving Media and Information Literacy for All

Pre-conference activities began on 29 October with workshops hosted by the Jordan Media Institute (JMI), designed to equip students from across Jordan with essential MIL skills. (programme). Additionally on 31 October, international and national partners will organize a series of side-events providing valuable insights and practical tools to foster collaboration and strengthen skills among attendees (programme).
