UNESCO and Egyptian Media Production City join forces to Promote the Preservation of Audiovisual Heritage

Dr. Nuria Sanz, Officer in Charge of the UNESCO Office in Cairo Met Dr Abdelfatah Elgibaly, Chairman of EMPC to discuss potential areas of cooperation including celebrating UN Day for Audiovisual Heritage, observed annually on October 27th. A dialogue workshop will be organized as part of this event, bringing together experts in preserving audiovisual heritage. Additionally, both parties agreed to organize an introductory day for UNESCO Cairo projects, aimed at students of the International Academy of Engineering and Media Sciences. The objective is to guide students in producing short films documenting UNESCO's heritage preservation initiatives and the possibility of launching a prize to support audiovisual heritage activities and initiatives.

During the visit, the UNESCO delegation toured the Media Production City, including the Center for the Restoration of Cinematic Heritage. The center plays a vital role in preserving and safeguarding audiovisual and documentary heritage, protecting them from damage and deterioration. The delegation received a detailed explanation about the center's operations from its responsible authorities by Dr Hani Abu Elhassan, Advisor to Media City for International Cooperation.

Furthermore, Dr Sanz, stressed UNESCO's profound interest in Africa and its rich cultural heritage while, El-Gabaly emphasized the Egyptian state's significant interest in Africa, considering it a natural extension of Egyptian heritage and culture. So, they highlighted the importance of organizing introductory sessions in Egypt for Africans to learn about the efforts dedicated to safeguarding audiovisual heritage.
