UNESCO and Dior unite to support communities and protect Mexico’s Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO and the French maison Dior are joining forces in a new conservation and sustainable development initiative to strengthen community-based activities around biodiversity and ecotourism in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico.

The reserve is home to millions of Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) whose migratory phenomenon is a symbol of ecological interconnection between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Local communities coexist with this unique natural phenomenon. Since its inscription on the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2006 and on the Natural World Heritage site in 2008, the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve has played a vital role in safeguarding butterflies and in securing water sources that supply millions of people.

Supporting community entrepreneurs

The initiative, coordinated by UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in collaboration with Mexico’s National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), supports five community-run microenterprises that are part of the “Monarch Butterfly Collective Brand” — an initiative that promotes sustainable artisanal products such as recycled glass jewellery, honey, Mazahua textiles, and crafts made from pine needles (ocoxal). The initiative will provide business training, marketing strategies, and support for accessing new markets, directly benefiting more than 60 local producers.

Leveraging ecotourism

Educational and wayfinding signage in the main public sanctuaries — El Rosario, Sierra Chincua, and Senguio — will be renewed to improve the experience of the more than 250,000 visitors who come each year to witness this unique natural wonder. The new signs will provide information on ecosystem services, site regulations, and the ecological importance of the area.

Project launch

A launch ceremony will take place on 28 March 2025 in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve to kick off the project, with the participation of representatives from CONANP, UNESCO, and local community leaders, showcasing the collective commitment to support global biodiversity conservation.
