As part of the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2025, taking place in Brussels, Belgium, an international panel titled “Artificial Intelligence and Journalism: How Media Outlets Are Covering and Using AI in Latin America” will be held to examine how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming journalism in the region. 

The event is co-organized by UNESCO, the Argentine Association of Journalistic Entities (ADEPA), the Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP), the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM), Momentum, and the Journalism and Tech Task Force.

What will the panel address?

The discussion will be divided into two parts. 

The first will focus on the challenges that AI presents for press freedom, media pluralism, and the economic viability of media in Latin America. 

The second part will highlight successful cases of media outlets using AI to enhance data journalism, combat disinformation, and protect journalists from hate speech. 

Key findings from the report “Artificial Intelligence and Journalism in Latin America” (UNESCO, 2023), produced in collaboration with IFPIM in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia, will be presented. 

The report examines how AI is affecting the financial sustainability of media and the regulatory frameworks needed for its ethical development.
