The BNU Project aims to bridge the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and career opportunities, empower young women to be key contributors to the digital economy, and promote gender equity in technology fields.

The launch event brought together high-level representatives from UNESCO, Beijing Normal University (BNU), the Government of Tanzania, and other key stakeholders. Notable speakers included Mr. Michel Toto, UNESCO Country Representative, and the MoEST Director of Basic Education on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Prof. Carolyne Nombo who both underscored the project’s critical role in advancing gender equality and digital education in the country.

Mr. Toto highlighted the importance of the UNESCO-BNU Project in addressing one of the most persistent barriers to gender equality: the digital divide. "Despite progress in expanding access to digital tools and STEM education, girls and women continue to face unique challenges," he stated. He emphasized that socio-cultural norms, financial constraints, and safety concerns often restrict women’s access to digital learning opportunities and that this project seeks to change that.

Mr. Abdul Maulid, MoEST Director of Basic Education officiating the launch on behalf of the Permanent Secretary

The MoEST Director of Basic Education on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Prof. Carolyne Nombo echoed this sentiment, noting that the project is in alignment with Tanzania’s national strategies, such as the Education Sector Development Plan and the National ICT Policy, which prioritize inclusive education and the integration of digital technology into learning.

The Director of Basic Education, Mr. Abdul Maulid reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to supporting the project, stressing the role of digital transformation in shaping the future of work, education, and economic development. The Tanzanian government has pledged to provide policy support, collaborate with international partners, and invest in digital infrastructure to ensure that every Tanzanian has access to the digital economy’s opportunities.
