The event will present the findings from the third Progress Report on Transboundary Water Cooperation (2024) and examine strategies to enhance regional water cooperation.

Overview

The webinar will highlight key findings from the 2023/24 reporting exercise, which reveals both progress and challenges in transboundary water cooperation. In the LAC region, while 21 out of 22 countries sharing transboundary rivers, lakes and aquifers have participated in monitoring, cooperation remains limited. Only one country reports more than 90% coverage of its transboundary waters by operational arrangements, while seven countries report less than 10% coverage or no cooperation at all. Notably, cooperation on transboundary aquifers faces particular challenges due to insufficient knowledge of groundwater systems in the region.

During the webinar, experts will examine successful cooperation initiatives, such as those for the Amazon River and the Guarani Aquifer System, while addressing regional challenges and gaps identified in the latest report. The session will also focus on strategies for improving reporting processes and strengthening water cooperation initiatives as countries prepare for the upcoming 2026 reporting exercise.
