“Sport Values in Every Classroom” Toolkit released in French and Spanish

In the context of the celebration of the 2021 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, UNESCO announces the release of the “Sport Values in Every Classroom” toolkit in French and Spanish.

The toolkit is a cross-curricular resource targeted at teachers and educators of students aged 8-12 years old and aims to help them instill some of the core universal values of sport: Respect, Equity, and Inclusion.

It consists of a set of 30 flexible and easy-to-use activity cards acting as complete lesson plans for educators, coaches and stakeholders working with young people and can be adapted to suit different contexts and populations. These activities can be delivered in the classroom, the gymnasium or outdoors, and can be used independently or to complement an existing curriculum or educational programme. The activities are engaging and movement-based, and have been successfully delivered to children both younger and older than the target age group during the pilot phase led by UNESCO in 2018-2019 through the . The toolkit also includes a Quick Guide and a Teacher’s Companion providing academic support to those who seek extra guidance or ideas.

Universal sport values are needed more than ever to build healthy, active, engaged communities of young people. The delivery of values-based education can foster mutual understanding and dialogue and support post-COVID-19 recovery. UNESCO’s “Sport Values in Every Classroom” toolkit is tailored to the needs of teachers and educators and can be applied both in schools and in informal educational settings.
Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO

The toolkit was first launched in English during the to UNESCO’s International Convention against Doping in Sport in October 2019.

The Anti-Doping Convention protects the values and integrity of sport by creating a global legal framework for governments. The sixth Conference of Parties to the Convention adopted Resolution 6CP/3 through which governments “recognize that values-based education programmes strengthen the prevention of doping and support deterrent measures, as well as the transfer of values to all spheres of life” and were called upon to ensure that funding is allocated to the “planning, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of anti-doping education programmes”, comprising anti-doping education, information and values-based education.

The material was developed by six international organizations including UNESCO, the Agitos Foundation (of the International Paralympic Committee), the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE), the International Fair Play Committee (IFPC), the Olympic Foundation for Cultural Heritage (OFCH), and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), forming an Education Partnership aiming at embedding sports values across educational programmes and at supporting the development of healthy citizens who participate fairly in society and in sport.
