Hi Suphane, tell us how you would describe your participation in the Global Children and Youth Action Summit, and what were the highlights of the experience

- Unprecedented;

As young people strive to have their voices heard on social and environmental issues, the youth of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face unique challenges such as poverty, inefficient health systems, and climate change. With SIDS4 approaching and SIDS5 scheduled for ten years later, the need for meaningful youth involvement is evident.

This led to the creation of the first-ever SIDS Global Children and Youth Action Summit (CYAS), themed 鈥淪mall Islands, Big Dreams: Children and Youth for SIDS Resilience.鈥 The summit was a dynamic mix of fun, education, and hard work, resulting in the creation of the SIDS Youth Commitments & Call to Action document. Additionally, it funded projects and initiatives led by children and youth at regional and global levels, addressing SIDS needs in line with the 4th International SIDS Conference Plan of Action.

These tangible outcomes are essential and appreciated. As an advocate for youth involvement, I was truly grateful to witness and participate in this significant milestone.

The Diversity

The CYAS summit brought together representatives from SIDS and other countries, alongside UN agencies, civil society organizations, and various stakeholders. This diversity infused the summit with a refreshing array of perspectives. I was continually inspired by conversations with youths from different walks of life and countries. The cultural differences enriched the summit, showcasing the organizers' open-mindedness in inviting delegates from various fields to address all aspects of the four themes.

One of the highlights was the informal conversations with delegates from countries such as Samoa, Cape Verde, Mauritius, Bermuda, etc. Often, it was my first time engaging with individuals from these nations. The work of these young people spanned across fields like journalism, activism, and government youth arms, and specialized professions. Each person was incredibly inspirational, highlighting the need for further collaboration across the SIDS region to achieve the resilient future we envision.

The Innovative Approach

The fresh approach at the GCYAS should be a model for all youth-centered conferences. From integrating technology like apps into master classes to promoting activism and having key stakeholders present to support our project ideas, the commitment to turning dreams into reality was evident.

The visual aspect of the summit was particularly striking. We made 10-year commitments aligned with the summit's themes, creating a mosaic of commitments displayed in the form of a wall, making a powerful visual impact. The event was never dull; activities like icebreakers with catchy chants and slogans kept our energy high.

Youth were involved every step of the way, from the youth planning steering committee to youth moderators, reporters, and presenters. This summit was truly made for youth by youth, and it showed in every aspect. The GCYAS demonstrated how genuine youth involvement can lead to innovative and refreshing events. Overall, I truly felt inspired and reinvigorated to continue my environmental activism and youth advocacy for years to come.
