Project
Sea Academy
The Sulubaai Environmental Foundation has made Pangatalan Island (Philippines) a model of sustainable management and a leader in ecosystem restoration.
The foundation is working in Shark Fin Bay where marine ecosystems have been suffering a lot from decades of illegal fishing, coral bleaching, and a recent cyclone. This is an issue for the unique biodiversity of Palawan, one of the richest in the world, but also for local communities that highly depend on these ecosystems for their livelihoods and food security.
Innovative restoration method
Its Sea Academy project brings together a diversity of actors from local stakeholders to international experts. They are working together on the development of innovative research and management tools. They have successfully created 4 actively managed community-based marine protected areas, and restored extensive areas of coral reefs degraded by dynamite fishing and coral bleaching. They also have developed a "fish lab", dedicated to grow and release a high diversity of fish postlarvae. They have conducted many training courses and activities in local schools.
These actions currently enable around 300 fishermen to go at sea every week. They can directly benefit from the project through improved catch and ecological conditions. The foundation wishes to ensure the continuity of its missions in Shark Fin Bay and to extend the project to a larger scale. Its aim: to make more propositions for the sustainable management and collaborative governance of coral reef social-ecological systems in the Philippines.
