Schools’ Environment Programme
Founded in 1991 by a group of Jamaican citizens concerned by ecological issues, The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) launched this dedicated environmental education programme. For nearly 20 years, “jetters” have been building and expanding the Schools’ Environmental Programme across the country.
A practical hands-on programme
Since being implemented in 350 schools, the pioneering and extremely pragmatic programme has benefited 400,000 students and 700 teachers. Participating institutions adopt a whole-school approach to carry out campus-based activities in 4 main areas: managing waste, greening school grounds, establishing environmental clubs and conducting environmental research. The secret to its success? A project format based on action plans targeting local communities through schools. Each year, an annual prize ceremony celebrates schools’ achievements.
Reaching out to the community through schools
Integrated into the school curriculum, the programme helps raise awareness about environmental issues and positive behaviours like recycling among students, and indirectly, their families and the entire local community.
To organise new projects and adapt their teaching methods, JET is always looking for new donors, sponsors and partners. Would you like to be one of them?
