Safeguarding cultural diversity and documentary heritage at the heart of Director-General鈥檚 visit to Toronto
On 18 November, UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, will travel to Toronto, Canada, to be a guest I.P. Sharp lecturer at the University of Toronto.
In her lecture, entitled 鈥淪afeguarding the Past, Shaping a better Future: UNESCO Soft Power in the Digital Age鈥, the Director-General will explore UNESCO鈥檚 work to safeguard documentary heritage along with the cultural heritage of humanity for the benefit of all.
Irina Bokova will also take part in a roundtable discussion on 鈥淧rotecting our Heritage and Fostering Creativity鈥 organized by the University of Toronto Faculty of Information and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.
The intervention of the Director-General will focus on the role of material and intangible cultural heritage in safeguarding cultural diversity, promoting social and economic development and fostering mutual understanding between cultures and communities.
The Director-General is expected to hold meetings with the President of the University, Mr Meric Gerltler, the President of the Board of the Canada Council for the Arts, Mr Joseph Rotman, the Dean of the Faculty of Information, Mr Seamus Ross and Mr Drew Fagan, Ontario's Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sports.
