Regional Meeting of the African Network of Information Commissioners (ANIC)

Namibia through the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) participated in the Africa Network of Information Commissioners (ANIC) Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya from 6 – 7 June 2023 on the invitation by UNESCO through the Namibia National Commission for UNESCO (NATCOM). This follows Namibia’s enactment of the Access to Information law in December last year.

The aim of the meeting was to learn best practices, challenges, and opportunities in the implementation of Access to Information Laws in Africa, and to discuss strategies for expanding ANIC and enhancing its institutional development, capacity building, and resource mobilization. The meeting further aimed to discuss pressing issues related to transparency and accountability.

ANIC is a Network of Information Commissioners, Ombudsmen, and other Regulatory Authorities, including Transparency Councils or Boards that are responsible for protecting, promoting, and ensuring the respect of the right of access to information within their respective jurisdictions.

The idea of establishing ANIC was conceived in March 2019 at the International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC) in Johannesburg, South Africa by a group of African countries who recognized the need for a network focusing on access to information on the African continent. ANIC held its first General Assembly from 7-8 April 2022 at which the draft Charter of the organization was considered.
