REDBIOS Network, knowledge transfer and collaborative partnerships in the Macaronesian Region

The XII REDBIOS Network meeting took place in the Azores from 22 to 26 September 2014. The meeting was organized by the Government of the Azores with the support of UNESCO鈥檚 Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the Government of Menorca (Spain).

The meeting participants included experts from UNESCO, the Institute of Responsible Tourism (ITR), REDBIOS and the MAB Committee of Portugal; representatives from different islands such as La Palma, El Hierro, Lanzarote (Spain), Corvo, Graciosa and Flores (Portugal), Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe; and mayors and the Regional Secretary of Agriculture and Environment of the Regional Government of the Azores.

During the meeting the participants discussed the establishment of a new biosphere reserve in the island of Sao Jorge in the Azores, and received the full support of the Regional Government.

The REDBIOS Network also proposed a series of collaborative partnerships to promote activities and strategies for knowledge transfers at local, regional, national and European levels, including international cooperation.
The REDBIOS Network will revise its strategy and policy framework and action programme to improve the efficiency of its interventions and support to REDBIOS biosphere reserves.

At the meeting, the REDBIOS Network paid tribute to Mr Juan Antonio Menendez-Pidal in recognition of his long dedication to the network, his significant contribution to the creation and promotion of REDBIOS reserves and associated regions, and to strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between communities and peoples of the REDBIOS Network.
