Promoting Open Educational Resources across Indonesia
With the support of the UNESCO Programme on Open Educational Resources (OER), the Open Terbuka University of Indonesia has produced a series of dual-language English and Bahasa Indonesian promotional materials on OER and extensively distributed them to all students including other Indonesian universities and during public events.
Open Educational Resources (OER) are any type of educational materials released with an open license or into the public domain that allows a user to legally and freely copy, use, adapt, and share the materials.
UNESCO believes OERs are vital to increasing access and quality of education for sustainable development and global citizenship.
The purpose of the OER promotional materials was to improve the quality of higher education materials by students within the Open Terbuka University as well as other Indonesian universities, as well as to increase the public鈥檚 awareness of OERs and general access to higher education opportunities.
The promotional materials including bookmarks, poster, flyers, and a video were produced in Bahasa Indonesian and English for global usage, released with an open license to encourage re-use, and distributed via email to all 300,000+ Terbuka students, hundreds of copies to all 300 Terbuka study centres across the archipelago, to 50 other Indonesian universities and institutions, and promoted widely in local newspapers and media organizations.
The OER promotional materials complimented the release of the OER course by Open Terbuka University in early 2015. The modules of the course are available to freely and legally download and modify in PDF, MS Word, and mobile-friendly ePub format.
UNESCO and the Open Terbuka University are planning a Workshop in November 2015 to develop the University鈥檚 1st openly-licensed Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).
