Project

Promoting access to information, freedom of expression, and empowerment of minors deprived of liberty in Costa Rica

The initiative, in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice and Peace and the Universidad Internacional de la Américas (UIA), aims to reduce the gap between people deprived of liberty and civil society to facilitate their acceptance within society and their ability to play beneficial roles for themselves and their communities.

The project seeks to empower and prepare minors deprived of liberty in Costa Rica with tools and skills that enable them to make valuable contributions to their communities and to serve as positive mentors for other minors in their localities.

To achieve this, the project consists of the publication of a community newspaper directed at juvenile detention centers within the Costa Rican penal system.

With a focus on mental well-being, the proposal seeks to foster creativity, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, access to information for decision-making about their lives and futures, including mental health and university education.

Classes are taught by UIA journalism and advertising students. Additionally, it is a pilot project that seeks to be replicated in other detention centers in Costa Rica.
