Prof. Shahbaz Khan, Director of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office for East Asia was invited to deliver opening remarks. He highlighted, with the adoption of three major international frameworks in 2015 - the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change - the international community has committed itself to addressing the greatest challenges defining our time. The establishment of UNESCO-designated sites, including World Heritage Sites, World Biosphere Reserves and World Global Geoparks, is an important vehicle for the cultural, biodiversity and geodiversity of the planet, a valuable treasure shared by all humanity. The concept of UNESCO designated sites is highly in line with the Chinese theory of ecological civilization. Geo-spacial information technologies are playing important roles for effective, accurate and precise protection &conservation, management and exploration of these designated sites. As the Biosphere Reserve site, World Heritage site and World Global Geopark, Mount Huangshan is a good example model of high-quality development on promoting sustainable development by harnessing geo-spacial information technologies. He also emphasized the importance of international solidarity and cooperation on preserving and conservation of UNESCO designated sites, partnership is important, no one can stand alone facing disasters and we must work together.
