Priority Gender Equality Training in UNESCO Quito Office
UNESCO鈥檚 Director of the Division for Gender Equality delivering training on Priority Gender Equality

From 24 to 25 April 2018, UNESCO鈥檚 Director of the Division for Gender Equality, Ms Saniye G眉lser Corat, was in Quito, Ecuador to deliver UNESCO鈥檚 mandatory training on Priority Gender Equality with assistance from Mr Damiano Giampaoli from the Division. Led by Ms Saadia S谩nchez Vegas, Head of Quito Field Office and Representative for Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, 17 colleagues from UNESCO鈥檚 Office in Quito attended the training which aimed to provide a better understanding of UNESCO鈥檚 approach and commitment to Priority Gender Equality as well as assist in identifying innovative solutions for gender-transformative programming. Colleagues in the Quito Office presented the current situation of gender equality issues in Ecuador and highlighted trends in Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela as the Andean Cluster Office. Programme staff members present in Quito also benefitted from Gender Clinic sessions with the Director and Mr Damiano Giampaoli, a one-on-one consultative session on specific gender equality questions related to UNESCO鈥檚 work in the country.
During her mission, Ms Corat also held bilateral meetings with selected national officials including: Dr Mauricio Rodas Espinel, Mayor of the City of Quito, and Ms Mar铆a Fernanda Pacheco, President of the San Jos茅 Municipal Trust; Ms N铆vea V茅lez Palacio, Vice-prefect of the Province of Loja; Ms Martha Vanegas, Director for Gender of the 鈥淪ocial Action Centre Matilde Hidalgo鈥; Mr Mart铆n Tamayo, Director of Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ms Rosa V谩sques Orozco, Under-secretary of Multilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Mr Roberto Beltr谩n, Titular Professor of the UNESCO Chair on Culture and Education for Peace (UTPL); Ms Gabriela Moreira, Academic Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair on Culture and Education for Peace (UTPL) and Mr Santiago Jos茅 P茅rez, Coordinator of Gender and Interculturality of the UNESCO Chair on Culture and Education for Peace (UTPL). Ms Corat also attended a special session of the UN Country Team (UNCT) in Quito upon invitation from Mr Arnaud Peral, UN Resident Coordinator in Ecuador, where she gave a brief presentation on UNESCO鈥檚 work in the area of gender equality and women鈥檚 empowerment. Her presentation was followed by an exchange with members of the UNCT, all of whom expressed sincere appreciation for the advances achieved by UNESCO in this area, both in programming and in the Secretariat. The UN Resident Coordinator indicated how impressed they all were with UNESCO鈥檚 achievements and how this experience should and could inspire the efforts of UNCT in Ecuador towards gender equality.
