Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Fl贸rez to be named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, will name celebrated Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Fl贸rez as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador on 16 November. The President of Peru, Ollanta Humala Tasso, is scheduled to attend the nomination ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters (12.20 p.m.).

Juan Diego Fl贸rez will be named 鈥渋n recognition of his dedication to initiatives related to social inclusion and education.鈥

In inviting the opera star to become a Goodwill Ambassador, the Director-General recognizes Juan Diego Fl贸rez鈥檚 鈥渄edication to initiatives related to social inclusion and education, especially in his capacity as President of the foundation Sistema de Orquestas Infantiles y Juveniles del Per煤 and to the ideals and aims of the Organization.鈥

Born in Lima in 1973, Juan Diego Fl贸rez has gained an international reputation performing in the most prestigious opera houses around the world mainly in works by Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini. But in frequent recitals and concert performances the bel canto tenor also includes Peruvian and Latin American music.

Juan Diego Fl贸rez also established the Sinfonia por el Peru foundation, which supports the creation of children鈥檚 and youth orchestras and choirs in the country. The project aims to transform society through music, reflecting the idea that orchestral and choral practice gives children and youth important values and helps preserve them from the dangers of drugs and crime.

UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors are an outstanding group of personalities who have generously agreed to use their talent and status to help focus the world's attention on the work of the Organization in education, science, culture and communication.
