New Policy brief on Sustainable Management of Marginal Drylands
The policy brief ‘Drylands - Sustaining Livelihoods and Conserving Ecosystem Services’ focuses on the second phase of the Sustainable Management of Marginal Drylands (SUMAMAD) project that was ran from 2009-2013.
The project was implemented by UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, in collaboration with the Institute for Water, Environment and Health of the United Nations University and with funding from the Flemish Government of Belgium and the participating countries. Through the project, scientists from nine countries - Bolivia, Burkina Faso, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Jordan, Pakistan and Tunisia shared information and their experiences of working in drylands.
The project started in 2002 with a first phase, and used harmonized methodologies for the research sites allowing results comparing and knowledge sharing. The second phase focused on building the capacity of dryland researchers to transfer their scientific findings for use in policy-level decision making, fostering drylands research and promoting sustainable livelihoods in drylands. The key messages and findings of this second phase are presented in this publication.
