National workshop on science subject standards revision in Tajikistan
This workshop is held within the UNESCO project "Strengthening competency-based and ICT–enabled STEM and VET education and teacher–training in Tajikistan," which is funded by the European Union. Participants represented various institutions including the Ministry of Education and Science of Tajikistan, the Academy of Education of Tajikistan, the Republican Institute for Teacher Training (RTTI), the Republican Methodological Center, Tajik State Pedagogical University, National University of Tajikistan, and both national and international experts in competency-based education and teacher training.
The primary focus of the National Workshop was to evaluate and grasp the significance of CBE standards and their role in effective teaching and learning processes within science subjects like biology, chemistry, and physics. Throughout the workshop, educational professionals were introduced to internationally recognized approaches of CBE standards development. Jointly, international and national experts, along with local subject working groups, assessed the STEM competencies and standards in school education through the lens of UNESCO’s International Bureau of Education (IBE). By integrating STEM competencies, the working groups revised and provided recommendations for existing biology, chemistry, and physics curricula. Moreover, participants engaged in practical exercises to integrate learning progressions and establish the primary elements of a learning environment based on a competency-based approach and the implementation of standards. Educational professionals, in consultation with international experts, collaboratively determined the most suitable approach for Tajikistan based on the vision and objectives of STEM education in the country. At the conclusion of the National Workshop, participants crafted STEM learning outcomes, domains, competences, and relevant performance indicators to include to biology, chemistry, and physics standards for grades 7-11. The workshop, accompanied by extensive resources, proved to be immensely valuable and appropriate to all attendees, providing invaluable insights and knowledge that significantly advanced their professional growth and understanding of the subject matter.
A four-year project was launched in January 2022 with the financial support of the European Union. The primary goal of the project is to improve overall quality of education in Tajikistan in the areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), ICT and VET and make progress in the achievement of the SDG4 in Tajikistan
