Project
NaDEET
For Viktoria Keding, young people should learn about ecology through hands-on immersion. That’s why she and a group of local women set up the NaDEET education centre in the heart of one of the world’s oldest deserts.
Passionate about sharing the magic of the Namib Desert, 15 years ago Viktoria Keding set up an environmental education centre with a group of local women. Situated in the NamibRand natural reserve, the NaDEET centre is powered almost exclusively by solar energy and has a minimal carbon footprint.
Concrete approach to sustainable development
NaDEET offers school children, teachers, parents and communities of all income levels experiential, hands-on sustainable development programmes and visits. To date, more than 200 schools have taken part in the programmes and the centre has welcomed over 13,000 children and adults. More than 1,500 eco-products – including solar ovens and lamps – have been distributed, not to mention practical learning materials for teachers to bring ecology to life in the classroom. NaDEET has also launched a free magazine, The Bush Telegraph, to raise awareness and foster more sustainable behaviours, as well as numerous books and guides.
