Strengthening culture data collection, measurement, and monitoring processes to support evidence-building on culture’s transversal contribution to sustainable development has been consistently stressed as an overarching priority across all regions of the world to support the integration of culture in policy design and implementation. The fragmentation and insufficient availability of culture-related data produced by different institutions have also hindered the funding allocated to culture. Member States have recognized the need to dispose of reliable data collection systems, including quantitative and qualitative measurement and monitoring mechanisms, at the global, regional, national, and local levels to ensure a more robust anchorage of culture across the policy spectrum. The side event led by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Philippine National Commission creates a framework for countries to present their experiences in data collection in the field culture through the implementation of the , the monitoring of the global SDG Indicator 11.4.1 and other relevant initiatives. By showcasing these results, the side event will also illustrate how data on culture can inform policies, address the challenges of sustainable development, and demonstrate the added value of culture for tackling global challenges - such as climate change, reducing extreme poverty, and boosting employment – as well as for the wellbeing of communities.
