Documented in a multitude of languages from San and Ajami to Dutch and French, Africa's rich documentary collections span across borders and continents, demonstrating the interconnectedness of African histories and their ties to the world. Contained in this book are vignettes of a shared history of humanity that reveal the stories, identities, cultures and traditions of African people, but also memories of displacement, resilience and wisdom. The documentary heritage collections hold the key to understanding the past, present and future of the continent.

Memory of the World - Documentary Heritage Treasures of Africa is the first regional publication of its kind that introduces the 26 documentary heritage inscriptions from Africa on the UNESCO International Memory of the World (MoW) Register up to 2023. Memory of the World is a UNESCO flagship programme created in 1992 for safeguarding documentary heritage of humanity. Its Register lists documentary heritage that have been assessed as meeting the criteria for world significance and outstanding universal value established by UNESCO.
