Materials of the "Integrated Water Resources Management" Study Course
"Integrated water resources management" study course for universities of Kazakhstan and Central Asia was developed in 2007 by the Center "Cooperation for sustainable development" with the support of UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office. In 2016, the course materials have been once again updated.
Today Central Asian countries move to the sustainable development principles to be incorporated into strategic documents and public administration practices. Since integrated water resources management (IWRM) is one of the tools for transition to sustainable development, the IWRM course development is considered to be a relevant and timely initiative.
In 2007 the Center "Cooperation for sustainable development" (CSD center), with the support of UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office, has developed an IWRM study course. In 2011, the course was updated for the first time. To date the IWRM course is introduced and being successfully taught at five universities of Kazakhstan; moreover, a number of other universities throughout Kazakhstan, as well as Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan use the course materials in their educational activities.
In recent years there have been significant changes in the field of water resources management. With the support of UNESCO Almaty Office, CSD center has successfully prepared an updated IWRM course, based on the latest materials. The presentations were improved; the course was enriched with new case studies and practical tasks.
The updated IWRM course will help young specialists to obtain management skills in the field of water use and protection, as well as will contribute to capacity building enabling them to address water issues in decision-making process. Understanding of future specialists the main causes of problems in water sector will help countries to make a general vision of their solutions and the measures of their implementation.
