Launch of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024-2033)
The Launch of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD) will be held during the Latin American and Caribbean Open Science Forum (CILAC) on Monday, 2 December 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in San Andrés Isla, Colombia. This event will provide a unique opportunity to engage in high-level discussions and shape the future of science and sustainable development.
The world is currently off track to meet some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, facing urgent challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. To address these issues, prioritizing research and innovation for sustainable development and fostering robust public support through sound, science-driven policies is essential.
The launch of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development at the CILAC Open Science Forum marks an important step toward bridging gaps between science and society. This Decade is all about fostering collaboration to tackle pressing global issues—from climate change to public health—by connecting scientists, policymakers, and communities. Emphasizing the power of open science, the initiative promotes shared research and accessible knowledge, empowering communities to innovate and adapt locally. Through these efforts, the Decade aims to make science a truly global public good, inspiring informed decisions, sustainable practices, and equitable progress for all.
About the IDSSD
On 25 August 2023, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the period 2024–2033 the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD) and invited UNESCO to lead its implementation (Resolution A/RES/77/326). This Decade presents a unique opportunity for humanity to unlock the full potential of science in pursuing sustainable development and ensuring a safe and prosperous future for all.
The IDSSD is now launching the First “Call for Initiatives” and invite all stakeholders to submit proposals that contribute to the goals of the IDSSD through the dedicated IDSSD Platform: . The deadline for submissions is 31 December 2024.
