Land subsidence: Latest advances in science and good practices around the world

The second webinar in the “Frontiers of Global Water Science” series, part of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) Anniversary, will focus on the critical issue of land subsidence. Distinguished experts from around the world will share the latest scientific advances and best practices in addressing this growing global challenge.
Overview
Land subsidence, primarily caused by groundwater pumping and aquifer-system compaction, has become an increasingly significant concern worldwide. Despite extensive knowledge of these processes, more regions are experiencing severe consequences from land subsidence, highlighting the urgent need for effective solutions and policies.
The webinar will feature leading scientists discussing the frontiers of land subsidence science, providing a comprehensive global overview of the current situation, its consequences, and successful management practices. The UNESCO Land Subsidence Flagship Initiative addresses these challenges through advanced research, collaborative solutions, and capacity building.
The event will include presentations from experts based in Italy, the Netherlands, Mexico, Indonesia, and China, covering topics ranging from delta survival to urban groundwater management. The presentations will showcase innovative approaches to monitoring, managing, and mitigating land subsidence impacts across different geological and urban contexts.
