“La Francophonie played a key role in the new sustainable development agenda that has just been adopted by the United Nations”, said UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, at the high-level event “Objectif 2030”, organized by the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) and held in New York on 28 September 2015.

Chaired by President Macky Sall, President of Senegal and of the Summit of la Francophonie, in the presence of Ms Michaëlle Jean, Secretary General of La Francophonie, the event aimed to rally the OIF’s 80 Member States and Governments with a view to giving impetus to the achievement of the 2030 agenda.

“La Francophonie is a prime example of a space open to cultural diversity and linguistic diversity; a space based not only on a shared language, but also on shared values – human dignity, human rights and gender parity. The new sustainable development agenda bears the imprint of this philosophy. The States and Governments of La Francophonie will play a crucial role in mobilizing and in implementing the 2030 agenda”, the Director-General emphasized, welcoming the Secretary General’s unfailing dedication and unrivalled ability to harness the energy of La Francophonie in the service of human development.

Speaking with a sense of urgency, the Secretary General confirmed OIF’s full commitment to the ambitious post-2015 development agenda, in particular alongside its most vulnerable country members. She reported on new activities undertaken in the spirit of the post-2015 agenda, such as an economic strategy emphasizing employment for women and young people, and a business incubator programme in Africa. 

During the event, young people launched an appeal for a sustainable, supportive future centred around six priorities, including raising young peoples’ awareness and involving them in decision-making, mainstreaming the gender approach and supporting a green, sustainable economy.
